Downspout Problems: Overflow, Leaks and Water Near the House

Repairs 5 min readUpdated September 5, 2026

Water spilling over a gutter does not always mean the whole system needs replacement. A blocked outlet, disconnected elbow or damaged downspout can interrupt drainage even when the gutter itself is sound. This guide helps Metro Detroit homeowners describe the problem before requesting an estimate.

Start with what you can see from the ground

Note where the water appears and whether it happens in light rain or only a heavy storm. Look from a safe, sheltered position; do not climb a ladder in rain, wind or icy conditions. A short video from the ground can help show an intermittent problem that is dry by the time the crew arrives.

What you noticeWhat to have checked
Overflow near a downspoutDebris at the outlet, blockage inside the downspout, or drainage capacity
Water escaping at an elbowA separated connection, damaged fitting, or blockage farther down
A loose or bent downspoutStraps, wall attachments, and damaged sections
Water pooling beside the houseThe discharge location and the ground's drainage path
Overflow along a gutter runDebris, pitch, gutter support, and the amount of roof runoff

These are inspection starting points, not diagnoses. Tell the estimator which side of the house is affected, how high the gutter is, and whether guards or an underground drain are attached.

Repair the problem at the right point

A connection or section may be enough

A detached elbow or damaged section may allow a focused repair. Ask the crew to assess the surrounding gutter, outlet and attachments before deciding the scope. Our gutter repair service covers downspout repairs and unclogging as well as leaks and loose gutters.

More capacity is a separate decision

A larger gutter alone is not a complete drainage plan. The roof area, outlets and downspout layout need to work together. If the system is clear but still overflows, ask what evidence supports a change in size or layout. Our gutter sizing guide explains the questions to discuss at an estimate.

Where does the water go after the downspout?

The discharge needs to carry runoff away from the foundation. An extension should not create a trip hazard or send water onto a walkway or neighboring property. The right destination depends on the property's slope, available space and local requirements. If water backs up from an underground line, explain that before booking: gutter repair and underground drainage work can require different scopes.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's gutter and downspout guidance explains why roof runoff and foundation drainage should be considered together. Gutters are one part of managing water around a home; they do not guarantee a dry basement.

What to send with your estimate request

  • Your city and the side of the house with the problem.
  • A wide photo showing the gutter and downspout from the ground.
  • A closer photo of a visible damaged connection, if safely reachable.
  • Whether the issue began after a storm, impact or recent work.
  • Whether the downspout empties above ground or connects to a buried line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a downspout be repaired without replacing all the gutters?

Sometimes. A damaged section or detached elbow may be repaired on its own when the surrounding gutter, outlet and attachments are sound. An inspection determines the appropriate scope.

Why does water overflow beside the downspout?

Possible causes include debris at the outlet, a blockage inside the downspout or a capacity problem. The location of the overflow alone does not establish the cause.

Do gutter guards eliminate downspout maintenance?

No. Guards can reduce debris, but outlets, guard surfaces and downspouts still need inspection and maintenance as conditions require.

What should I include in a downspout repair request?

Send your city, a description of where water appears, ground-level photos, and whether the downspout connects to an underground drain. Ask about current availability when requesting your free estimate.
